The Canarian Museum
With Canarian Museum Gran Canary owns one of the most spectacular historical expositions of the Canarian native inhabitants and about the genesis of the Canarian archipelago. The museum was founded during the second half of the 19th century in the “Casa Constitucional”, the former town hall in front of the Santa Ana church in Las Palmas, the capital of the island. The museums concept stayed extensively unchanged since the building of the house.
In the centre of the exhibition you can find documentations about the native inhabitants´ life since the Spanish colonization around the year of 1500 after the turning point in history. Clearly divided, subject-related departments inform about archeological, anthropological, paleontological, geological, numismatic and sociological aspects. Moreover, there is a bibliographic collection and presentation of works of art of selected Canarian artists.
Since the 1990s the exhibitions in the Canarian Museum are concentrating on archeological evidences of the native inhabitants. Therefore, religious and social traditions of the prehispanic population, their settlement-history, way of life and trading activities are shown. Also topics like mummifying the dead, creating ceramics or agricultural economy belong to that. As a result, every visitor of the Canarian Museum will find a lot of valuable information. Some exhibits are even surprising, such as the one proving that the native inhabitants already were able to do brain operations.
With the help of models and information boards the Canarian Museum derives the present from islands´ history. Take part in an interesting time travel to the Canarian native inhabitants. This unique experience is absolutely worthwhile.
