Thousands of years ago Gran Canary rose in the middle of an enormous ocean after a volcanic erruption and therefore provides precipitous underwater slopes with perfect viewing and flow conditions for unique diving experiences. The diversity of the underwater landscape as well as the untouched flora and fauna of the various shallow and ballow water areas are extremely impressive.
Dives leading through shipwrecks from different historical eras make it interesting and surely adventurous. Near Pajar a relatively young wreck, sunken in 2003, can be explored by divers. It is often lionised by gigantic rays. Also a German submarine is supposed to be submerged. This, nevertheless, is at the depth of about 60 metres, which makes dives impossible.
The reef of Arguineguin is known for its huge population of cuttlefishes. In Gáldar the diver will come across a labyrinth of caves.
Besides reef fishes even angel sharks live at the artificial reef near Pasito Blanco. Parrotfishes splash about in water near Pasito Blanco close to Maspalomas, furthermore goatfishes and sea breams. A wide range of sea dwellers can also be gazed at in the sea preserve near Aguimes, close to the rocks of El Cabrón, e. g. sea basses, morays and barracudas.
The underwater nature preserve El Cabrón grants a sensational spectacle when diving between volcanic rock formations and schools of fish.
