Gran Canary - Capital Las Palmas
Las Palmas - Regional meaning:
Las Palmas is the fascinating capital of Gran Canary. The metropolis in the north east of the island provides a home for almost 400,000 people under the southern sun. It is the head quarter of the administrative committees of Gran Canary, including some with national authority. Furthermore it is the centre of cultural und economical activities and a trendy metropolis.
Panorama:
Las Palmas is considered one of the most beautiful islandic cities of the whole canaric archipelagos. The appearance is characterized by the palm-lined inner city, just like the name promises. The lovely panorama of Las Palmas is particularly revealed from the sea side. The city is embedded into 2 spacious bays of the Atlantic Ocean. The golden, fine sandy beaches of Playa de las Alcaravaneras and Playa de las Canteras are like magnets for sun worshippers.
Historical notes:
Las Palmas is looking back on more than 500 years of civil history. The historical origin of Las Palmas is attributed to a castilian military camp. Fishers were living in the oldest and today still existing parts of the city Vegueta and Triana. An economical boom was possible due to the development of an international port. Centuries-old buildings in the centre of Las Palmas, founded in 15th century, still mirror the historical way of life. Due to this unique architecture some parts of the capital of the island were designated as UNESCO World Heritage. There is a party on the occassion of the founding every year on 24th of June.
Sports and fun:
Glittering carnival parties as well as typical canary sports events, such as wrestling and sailing make a visit of Las Palmas, with its caribbean stamped flair, inevitable. The pulsating life can be seen in exclusive shops, cafés, parks as well as cultural events. The Canary Museum, the Science Museum Elder, the Opera Alfredo Kraus and the palm-lined "Plaza of the frogs" with shopping opportunities and bars, just to exmplify some of the attractions. To lovers of nature we recommend the visit of the parks of Doramas and San Telmo with sparkling, exotic plants and flowers.
