Cenobio de Valeron
As an especially important piece of evidence for traditional canaric lifestyle the supply depots „Cenobio de Valeron“ is regarded. These are located near Santa Maria de Guia, in the North of Gran Canary, around 40km from Las Palmas.
Guia is a friendly south-spanish city with more than 20.000 inhabitants and a beautiful church in its centre. The place became especially famous because it was the home town of the artist Lujan Pérez. When visiting Guia one should definetely try the local cheese. There is even an annual cheese festival to celebrate the delicacies.
The "Cenobio de Valeron" near Guia have been created on the form of caves. They include several hundred rooms on different heights right in tuff rocks formations. Therefore, a connection with paths and stairs between those was necessary. In the end a complex network developed. The caves had different functions. To figure out their function, interesting debates took place. Today, it is assured that the caves were not only used by the Guanche people as depots and living place, but also as caves for assemblies.
Due to its very good condition one can easily feel the mysticism of this prehispanic area. If you have further interest in Guanche culture we also recommend a visit to the caves of Cueveas de Las Palomas, Tabuco at Ingenio, La Audiencia, Cuatro Puertas at Telde, El Alamo and Acusa near Artenara.
