Gran Canary - the varied Agaete
Agaete Characteristics of the place:
Agaete mirrors the traditional, building structure on the archipelagos. Narrow alleys with small, neat houses are typical for this picturesque little town. This is where you can see carved details on balconies and doors. In small, rich-in-tradition-shops you can buy beautiful handmade products and try real canaric specialties. This place is the starting point for interesting excursions into the fascinating landscape.
The valley of Agaete with its numerous subtropical plants provides beautiful hiking possibilities to the woods of the Tamadaba mountains. The lively habour city of Las Palmas with it´s amazing sandy beach, beautiful places, a historic old town as well as extraordinary shopping and entertainment possibilities, is only 30 minutes away.
Symbole of canaric joie de vivre:
The biggest fiesta and at the same time symbole of the special Gran Canaric identity is the "Fiesta de la Rama" - the celebration of the sprigs on 4th August. It is said that this is a ritual celebration - a rain ceremony - which origin lies with the native population. This fiesta is very impressive, full of life and always worth a visit.
Climate:
The municipality Agaete picks up points due to its geographical conditions in the north west where the warm and dry climate predominates all year. The reason for this pleasant weather is that the municipality, despite its location in the north west, isn´t immediately exposed to the north-east-trade-wind.
Destinations:
The varied landscape near El Risco is perfect for hiking in the close-by mountains, for visiting the cliff-lined nature bathing bay, for exploring the region around Agaete as well as for boat trips. On an excursion into the valley of Agaete you will discover a lovely fresh water lagoon as well as a tropical world of exotic plants, e.g. coffee, bananas and mango. The close-by harbour of the fishing village Puerto de las Nieves allows you a comfortable ferry-trip to the neighboring island Tenerife.
