Gran Canary - Tejeda

Tejeda is about 40 kilometres away from Las Palmas, within the central highland massif of Gran Canary. The place is located about 1,000 metres above sea level, surrounded by high mountaintops. Tejeda with approximately 2,500 inhabitants is considered as "secret capital of the Cumbre (heights)" by its locals. The mountain village reminds of a Swiss mountain farm village. From this place you will enjoy the unique view to the Roque Bentayga.
The impressive panorama at the level of Tejeda overawes during any time of the day. When the settlement is veiled in clouds the whole surrounding seems very romantic, when the sun is shinning the tors are attracting the climbers and during the winter time you will feel the power of the phenomenal nature.
Tejeda, which is located eastern of the middle of Gran Canary is regarded as the northern crossing point of the mountain passes. It is located near a spectacular valley and, archeological discoveries prove this, was populated by Guanches hundreds of years ago.

The village Tejeda:

With its picturesque white houses, the affectionate groomed promenade and narrow alleys, the remote Tejeda is always worth a holiday trip. Here you will not only find rural country life of Gran Canary like it was ages ago, but also you will discover the singularity of the alpine height region of the canaric archipelagos.
You don´t even have to dispense with small, unique presents for your friends: Tejeda´s shops provide many beautiful souvenirs. Sweets made of marzipan as well as the local almond cake are notably famous.
The gastronomical supply provides simple, rustic food, such as tapas and local wine, but also more sophisticated, culinary comforts will be satisfied in Tejeda.

"Cruz de Tejeda and the artist Néstor Martin Fernándes de la Torre"

Especially interesting for visitors is the highest pass of the island, the Cruz de Tejeda which is about 5 km away. You can see restaurants, turrets, a yard, an atrium and a lithic cross, at whose foot you find donkey drivers, booths and souvenir shops. The artist Néstor Martin Fernándes de la Torre, who also designed the famous "Pueblo Canario" in Las Palmas initiated the development of this scenic setting.

Lush vegetation and the landmarks Roque Nublo and Pico de las Nieves

The landscape is lush green and the surrounding of Tejeda is full of almond and fruit trees, also vegetables are grown here. Following the Cruz de Tejeda towards Roque Nublo and Pico de las Nieves, you get even deeper into the alpine world. The Roque Nublo is an enormous piece of rock out of volcanic rock and the most famous landmarks of Gran Canary. It is in contrast to the surrounding mountain massif and is one of the most photographed objects of the island. The Pico de las Nieves, on the other hand, is popular with hikers and climbers because it is the highest point of the island.

It is only half an hour via the highway from Tejeda to the touristically developped south of the island. It is about the same journey time to get to the Atlantic coast through the green landscape of the north.
