Museums on Gran Canary
Gran Canary is a centre of scientific projects in history, archeology, botany, ethnology and oceanography. Many of the scientific findings are shown in interesting exhibitions. These are a real counter pole to the usual picture of Gran Canary as being a bathing, sports and party island.
Especially historic museums can be found on Gran Canary. The canaric people today are quite proud of their Guanche heritage. For example you have the "Museo Canario", "Museo y Parque Aquelogico Cueva Pintada", "Museo de Historia" and the "Museo de Guayadeque".
Especially worth a trip is the "Elder Museum" for science and technology with its typical airplane nose at the entrance. The visitors can visit optical and physical worlds and the museum offers a visitors lab, where children and parents can spend hours experimenting.
The "Centro Atlantic de Arte Moderno" in Las Palmas is the crossing point of the modern canaric and international art discourse. If you are interested in the development of the art scene then "Museo Nestor" is worth a visit, too. Here the works of the canaric symbolic artist Nestor de la Torre are exhibited. To have a look at the art of Fernando and Juan de Leon & Castillo who planned the harbour of Las Palmas you should visit the "Museo León y Castillo".
