Opening times of shops and establishments in Gran Canaria

Binding opening times for shops and establishments do not exist in Gran Canaria. Every owner has the right to decide on their working times for themselves. That is why you should always ask for opening times before going out for shopping or visiting an insitution.

Usually the shops do not open before 9 am or even 10 am. In the evening they close at 8 pm or 10 pm. These opening times go for most of of the supermarkets, brand shops and department stores in the tourist centres of Gran Canaria. These shops and the big theme parks normally are opened on sundays, too.

Little shops, instituional local, cultural or medical establishments often have different opening times than big shops. The same goes for museums. Authorities usually have office hours during the morning. Churches generally don´t have opening times. Therefor,  it is advisable to make an appointment.

In contrast to openening times shop owners and institutions act strictly in accordance to their siesta. Due to the high temperatures during midday and afternoon nearly no Canarian will forego their traditional break. As a result, most of the shops are closed from 1pm until 4pm or even 5 pm. However many restaurants offer a midday menu during this time. After the general closing time the restaurants are prepared for their dinner guests. The nightlife in clubs and bars does normally not start at midnight.
