Volcanic crater Caldera de Bandama on Gran Canary
A fire-spitting volcano bears incomparable witness to the immense power of nature. This especially applies to Gran Canary, risen from the Atlantic Ocean through eruptions.
The Caldera de Bandama in the northeast of the island, municipality Las Palmas de Canaria, is a crater that reaches almost 200 metres down and has a diameter of 1.000 metres. It impressively demonstrates the power needed for the geological shaping of Gran Canary.
You can marvel at the solidified monumental crater from the top of the Bandama, more than 500 metres above sea level.
This holiday destination can be scaled by hiking or more comfortable by car. A well constructed serpentine road leads along the vineyards up to the observation platform.
You will see more than just tons of lava rocks when you get there. Even the climb-down to the bottom of the crater is possible to the brave people. Surprisingly you will find a former farm house, amongst citrus trees, succulents and palms, down there. This vegetation follows the former greening with grapevine in terrace cultivation inside the crater.
This is where the Dutchman Daniel Van Dame successfully practised vineyard cultivation in 17th century.
The contrast between the rocks and the greening inside the crater, the panorama to the east and north coast as well as the view on the Canaric neighboring island Fuerteventura will certainly stay in your memory for a long time.
How to get there: Take the motorways GC 3 or GC 4 to Tafira (suburb of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The way on the high street GC8 02 is well-signposted with "Bandama" and "Campo del Golf".
Our advice before the climb-down: go to the Pico de Bandama by car to enjoy the view on the crater.
The hike itself isn´t that hard, the route of about 3.5 kilometres is the equivalent of a hiking time of approximately 2 hours. It is strongly recommended to take enough water with you.
After this trip you have the opportunity to play golf (in case you want to). Since the English-founded Golf Real Club de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is located in the south of the Caldera de Bandama. It is the oldest Spanish golf club.
