Barrancos (valleys) on Gran Canary

Barrancos (canyons) trench and characterise the landscape of Gran Canary. They serve as living area, agricultural field und - due to the vertical rock face - as climbing area. Beyond that the barrancos, e. g. the Barranco of Fataga (a popular viewpoint) near Playa de Ingles as well as especially the waterfall-lined Barranco de la Mina in the northeast of the island, are considered to be natural water reservoirs. This is why many moisture-loving plants sprout in the canyons of Gran Canary. This lush, green growth and the biodiversity, e. g. as can be seen in the Barranco de Azuaje, reminds of tropic jungle.

An unique trip to nature, especially for botanic-lovers, is a visit of the Barranco del Laurel near Moya. This canyon is overgrown with rare trees and groves, such as laurels, coolibah trees and dragon trees. Plant species that are only one of their kind in the world grow here.

Another interesting trip option into the canyons of Gran Canary is the Barranco Guayadeque. This is where the natives of the Canaric archipelago, the Guanches, settled hundreds of years ago.

Another beautiful example for the canyons of Gran Canary is the Barranco Moya. Besides experiencing rare amphibians and insects as well as the climate, characterized by humidity, hikers will marvel at historical, fully functional aqueducts. Experience this time journey into the past on a hiking or trekking tour.

Due to the shade-giving plants, the humidity and purling water, the climate is rather pleasant. During the rainy season you should go on this trip accompanied by an experienced guide because the falls of rain are going down to the bottom of a canyon like waterfalls and waterscapes develop. After this hiking tour a trip to the close-by romantic fishing village San Felipe pays off. Here you can recharge your batteries with local specialties.
